I lost my father to suicide at 17 in 1966. We were a military family so we left town the next day and were welcomed by supportive family. I had are recurring dream from years that I was on death row, vainly protesting my innocence. It took me ten years to begin recovering adequately and the healing occurred because I became a special Ed teacher which gave me the opportunity to help people with issuers greater than my own. I’ve colleagues and students over e years to suicide and one never knows why. They are just gone.
Not too long ago, in my meditation group, the leader spoke of some friends who’d just lost a daughter to suicide. I spoke of my own loss but found myself covering my face in shame and weeping. A couple of minutes later I was fine, but the heart never forgets.
