To Be Known —a “hoofnote” to this conversation
It is the longing of every human heart. And because we are human, such longings express themselves in a multitude of ways; from simply, utterly being known by God, to that of acclaim and appreciation by the human community.
It is rare that the former is enough, and it often only comes toward the end of The Journey. It is a descent into LOVE, as Friar Richard Rohr puts it, a “falling upward”. I subscribe to several different spiritual sources, organizations and persons. One thing many have in common is this need to be known, to be acknowledged by other humans. It is a distraction from the emptied “knowing” that is union with Divine LOVE (God).
Those who write prolifically, host podcasts, speak all over the country, engage heavily in social media interaction whether they acknowledge it or not are trying to satisfy that longing we all have. I confess I have it as well, though I also attest to the greater beauty and depth of oneness with God alone.
Ironically, some write but do not allow comment or interaction? Apparently, just knowing many have subscribed and some even reading is enough? I guess my point here is that one relationship is above all else. Once you experience that union, nothing else can satisfy, although intimate human relationships come closest. The face-to-face, the one-on-one of two people carries the potential for the divine.

What began as a sweet, funny story quickly turned into poignant sadness and evolved into strength. I’m wiping way tears as I write this. I have thought often about how I take my dog for his daily morning and evening “smells” (they are not walks so much as focused on getting his PhD in smells of the neighborhood, much like Lucas), but this story reminds me how much my dog is teaching me mindfulness and being in the present and to enjoy every “smell” before one of us moves on
