the idea of universal consciousness relates to an infinite multifarious reality. each instance of reality may share a common meaning, but what we experience in each instance is caused by our choices. hence, imho, it is a combination of meaning and causation. i.e., free will matters. so, when someone talks about god's will, to me, that is the abstract idea that the universal consciousness wants peace, harmony, and love for us but it doesn't identify specific steps to generate that. it is up to us to do that or not do that and the infinity of our individual choices make up the totality of consciousness. the monk made a choice. what the arm does is chosen.
