This is a timely article for me to read. I have been struggling with a situation - trying to devise a way to speak up. I would appreciate any suggestions specific to my situation. I have new neighbors. I really like them both (husband and wife) except for one thing. The husband - now in his 70s - always mentions someone's race if they are non-white, especially when relating a story that is a little disparaging to the subject. I'm trying to find a way to say it is not cool without alienating or offending a new neighbor/friend. I'm not sure he would even understand what I'm trying to tell him without long explanation. If anyone has any suggestions?
