This is a timely article for me to read. Just this week I think I lost a cherished long-distance friendship by speaking up when he described the fun he had when he attended an anti-mask protest gathering in his city. I tried to balance what I wrote to him, not too harsh and accusatory ("What a selfish and dangerous thing to do!") but also not too accepting and subtle ("That sounds fun, but wasn't very safe") and in the end said something in between about being sorry about the risk that posed to himself and others. He has now ended our daily email correspondence without any comment to me about what I said, I'm sure he is furious that I expressed disapproval of that risky behavior. I'm sad if the friendship has ended, but didn't feel I could stay silent about this.
