Yes, to be honest I could simply ignore it all just like our squirrels and birds do. But my faith calls me to be actively in the world though not not of it.
A bit of back story — I was born in North Dakota where our large Irish Lakota family have always been, western Dakotas and eastern Montana. Many of us made our way to Sacramento, California where good jobs and careers were available for my engineer father and several of his brothers.
Back then Sacramento was a cordial balance of Republican and Democrat, we even had a blue newspaper and a red one; The Bee and The Union. We are pretty much blue through and through these days as many abandoned the GOP after feeling betrayed by “Tricky Dick”.
So yes, I could easily ignore all the nonsense nationally and live happily here with my own big family. Truth told, leaving politics out of life and focusing on family and football keeps us all loving and content. But inside of me is a heart for Creation and all life, which includes my grandchildren. And I care deeply about marginalized people, including indigenous and immigrants, not to mention the environment (earth) that sustains us. So when I see both under attack by greedy power mongers I can not stay quiet!
And yes, I’m deeply troubled that 70 million of my fellow Americans voted for and support a narcissistic, greedy, immoral man of detestable character and personal history! I detect the dark underbelly of white supremacy that is part of our nation’s formation and history.
So it is that I live my life in this “golden season” holding much great suffering only by Grace and much Greater LOVE.
