There is a movement of White women in South Africa called the Black Sash society. It began in apartheid days to protest the law mandating that Black women traveling from the townships to be housekeepers in the white area carry permits to travel outside of the townships. I am very privileged to know one of these women, now in her late 80s. She is intelligent, warm, humorous, and a delight to be around. Thank you for this article about the resistance and the ways in which we whites can be allies. Reading Mandela’s book, “The Long Walk to Freedom” left me in awe of what so many did and sacrificed, not just Mandela and including many white and Indian people, for the end to apartheid.
