This discussion on the prioritised functioning of negativity preference of human mind is old for which there is no easy rational answer to; esp. for each event tailor cut seeking ready answer. Reactions obviously will vary according to the diligence, education, experience etc. of the subject concerned and the complexity quality he or she faces. Hence, more than this elitist rumination in the entire article posted, I like the second part of the head quote by John O’Donohue at the very beginning “...you can transfigure negativity by turning it toward the light of your soul.” which I believe approximates an answer.
Modern psychology refuses to accept ‘Soul’ as the most important ingredient of a human person. Yogic Knowledge does. The ‘Mind’ under the pressure of ‘Ego’ can fall into egregious traps, also in priority handling.
May I tender here a “biological” explanation for this negativity registration preference and the behaviour that necessarily follows. It is “survival-instinct” gene embedded in most biological beings. Children, as much as cockroaches keep away immediately from fire, the moment they sense it, because their survival instinct biologically alerts them, that it will kill them. Thus anything that threatens or tends to threaten human life acquires utmost priority, applies also to all organic beings. Positive things are pro-Existence, hence, while welcome; enjoy no priority for the human body to survive to be given any immediate attention. ‘Negative’ experiences, esp. harsh ones sink into your Sub-conscious and Unconscious and will continue troubling you from there. You need to learn to wash thoroughly your entire brain to rid them and Yoga & Meditation can help because, before you reach the ultimate Superconscious state in meditation, you have to rid your Mind of all objects, a content-less pure Consciousness. This is where the importance of the Soul figures and O’Donohue points at.
Once the importance of the Soul is recognised the Human treacherous Mind will listen to its Inner Voice, kick out and humble the Ego and save you from umpteen bad experiences in life.
