My husband and I just got back from Napa Valley. We'd never been there before, never done a real 'wine tasting'. Neither had many of the other guests at the tasting. We had a great time and learned a lot about wine and grapes. A few weeks after returning home, the terrible fires struck Napa Valley and nearly burned the two wineries we'd visited. The last line of your piece hit me - about the earth turning suffering into strength and beauty. Who knows what the future holds for Napa Valley after this fire, but I'll be looking for the strength and beauty, and maybe a certain smokiness of this year's vintage.
