Personally, when I am overwhelmed and need to lift myself up, I don't write a to-do list, I write a What-I-have-done list! Everytime I accomplish anything on that day I write it down. It makes it more joyful and I find myself wanting to see how long the list was at the end of the day. It's a real pick me up! I like to enjoy life.
