Very nice piece--I've never heard this story before and I commend Ms Gibb. With all respect--and don't want to diminish Ms Gibb's achievement one iota--maybe the drama has been elevated here just a smidgeon. In 1966 if you didn't get married, "There was no way for women to support themselves economically"? Single women were working and supporting themselves in the 1960s --granted, most of them were teachers, nurses, or in one of the other traditionally acceptable fields for females. It was a very different (and much less rich) world, I agree, but maybe not quite Victorian or Edwardian.
