I found it soothing to read. Our family has experience with mental illness and sometimes I regret and wonder if loosing my Catholic faith due to some of the issues related to what the movie 'Spotlight' illustrated; and feeling ex-communicated because of my experiencing divorce ..if my not having a faith has contributed to my loved ones having a mental illness. The stance the Catholic church took towards women, which as my own mother said 'an annulment would mean you'd have to declare your kids 'bastards''...Several priests in different communities, in the Interior of British Columbia, told me I could attend mass but not receive communion.. could not seek employment as a teacher in the R.C. school system because I was divorced...even though I was born a Catholic and educated at Catholic University.I have found working as a teacher on call at a local Indian Band school to be nurturing because of this different 'portal' of seeing the world that Irene is describing. I worked when I was younger at a Catholic school in a Cree community in northern Alberta, only for one year. I remember thinking at that time(late 1970's)) someone needs to gather the Cree myths and record them.... I'm going to find that dictionary Irene help create, in our local library.. Now that I have an IPhone, which I'm trying to take pictures with, I look at 'soil erosion' on some of my walks here in the 'Okanagan' and think it reminds me of our minds....and the idea of how our minds are 'eroding' ....maybe that is due to the loss of our souls....because of the loss of 'refection'...thank you for a very interesting read. a carved statue at their health centre, remembering the victims of the residential schools...
