Brene, Jill and Daily Good readers, In my opinion there is a place in an ethical, enlightened persons being for healthy shame. This is the shame I feel when I read about the killings of innocent young black women and men by police-realizing that I am a part of a racist system that hurts my sisters and brothers. This shame is a part of my commitment to dismantle the racist system and replace it with a just, fair social structure. If we lived in a fair, just democracy then shame would have a different quality and not be a positive part of my life. But we don't .
