I noticed a number of years ago (when I was working steadily at my own business) that in striking up conversations with strangers, all they wanted to talk about was themselves. When I realized that I was doing all the asking (and was never asked about myself) and was perfectly okay with that, I became oblivious to my notions of self-importance. Luckily for me, this happened long before retirement, thus making the transition quite easy. Unfortunately, very few people take the time to ask others about their lives these days, When I take the time to do just that, I discover my value.
