It is noteworthy that misogyny is present in the writings of Rumi; one inevitably comes upon it when reading Rumi. When encountering words of slander and contempt against an entire gender of humanity, one half of a fully human civilization, one is suddenly stopped in their tracks, the hair stands on end, and all the beauty contained in the words of Rumi are, in-an-instant, lessened. Misogyny also appears as well in Epistles and Revelations, both of which are books added onto Christ words in the Gospels, words of hatred and disrespect toward women that contradict the actual words and actions of Christ. Words of misogyny still parade around the world, masquerading as truth, so-called "God's" religious truth, even though words of disdain against an entire group of humanity will never be any part of the truth of love and loving. So-called religions and state-sponsored and state-sanctioned theocracies still greatly disrespect our humanity. How long will we allow disrespect and contempt to be claimed as truth against women or any group of peoples? And what has been lost to human civilization through millenniums of disrespect toward women, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, aunts, nieces, wives, and girlfriends in the sea of ignorance and arrogance formed of that disrespect? Paul, the writer of many misogynistic Epistles, ironically said it best. To use his own words,
"If I speak with the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."
Yes, words of contempt and scorn will always be like clanging gongs and cymbals, warning and alarming us, stopping us in our tracks, taking our breath away, lessening the light of day, darkening our world, treading on the heart and soul of our humanity, and giving themselves away as obvious and loud betrayals of respect, love, justice, mercy, and truth. Contempt and scorn will never speak for a God or a humanity of love and loving.
