I believe, those who wish to direct their own healthcare need to be free to decide how they wish to live their last days. As a husband who was stunned by the abruptness of how my wife became ill and died within a year, I learned that being prepared is better than being thrown into the seriousness of the medicalization of a loved one, AND not feeling you have any control. My twin brother died five years after my wife, AND we created an amazing array of celebratory moments such as: Christmas caroling door to door, even though none of us had ever done it before (my brother's request); bringing friends and a guitar and singing his favorite Beatle songs; and bringing friends and family at different times to share special moments, while he was in our home, AND not at the hospital.
If you have never heard of it, nor read it, read Helen Nearing's book on the "intentional" fasting and passing of her husband Scott Nearing, when he was 100 years old and when he decided it was his time to go: "LOVING AND LEAVING A GOOD LIFE."
