Brown, clearly a man of credence, has shone a light on why we seriously need to re-think what is happening in our modern families, schools, institutions and possibility even our workplaces. Play is about the freedom to take risks, to imagine, to create possibilities, to lose oneself in the moment. It is about connecting with who we are and about learning how we can bring a unique contribution to the world. The beauty of this article is that this is the first time I have heard a man of science proclaim that 'play' is part of our evolutionary life-cycle…. it doesn't or shouldn't stop once we grow up. If there is evidence that shows play in childhood is essential in developing a healthy mind WHY WHY WHY aren't our school curriculums incorporating PLAY throughout our entire compulsory schooling years. That's all the way through to adolescence and into adulthood. No wonder our children are growing up with a whole myriad of mental health issues - anxiety, depression, low self-worth, violent behaviour…. Something obviously isn't working and maybe, just maybe this is the key.
