It's important to broaden our "self"-interest to others -- and beyond the human community as well. The entire living planet needs us to decentralize, needs us to respect the habitats, animals, oceans, plants, mountains and watersheds -- which we are quickly destroying through population, consumption, pollution. Even if humans are incredibly wonderful with one another, in the long run we can't live on a planet we've destroyed.
