I have asked the following questions to myself and continue to do so. If you think that they are worth asking one-self then please do so.
Do I need more than 4 pairs of formal clothes and 3 pairs each of home-dress and innerwear?
Do I need more than 1 pull-over and 1 jacket/wind-sheeter?
Do I need more than one pair each of walking shoes, formal shoes and chappals/floaters/sleepers?
Do I need more than 2 tumblers each of water for brushing my teeth and shaving? Do I need shaving foam/cream/gel and after shave lotion?
Do I need deodorants/perfumes/face-cream/hair oil or gel or cream/talcum powder etc?
Do I need A/c in my bedroom ON at every night? Can fan do?
Do I need to eat more than 1800 calories per day?
Do I need to watch TV for 3-4 hours a day? Or do something else.
Do I need to call 4-5 persons for chatting everyday?
Do I need car and driver? Is public transport available? Use it.
Does my work compel me to have a cell-phone? Does this phone have to be Blackberry, 3G, 4G and now 5G with unnecessary unused features?
Do I need to go by car for the morning walk or I can do without? Do I need a big expensive car only?
Do I need to go to Gym or I can do simple exercises at home to keep myself fit and healthy?
Do I need to have bath for more than 3 minutes everyday? Do I need expensive bath-soap/shampoo etc?
Do I always switch off lights, fans, A/c when I am not in the room?
Do I need to drink only mineral water always while travelling?
If I need any of the above for my pleasure, status, ego, prestige then I need to have those. I cannot do without them. But if I do not need them for such purposes then I should be rational as much as possible. Every reduction in wants will make us more civilized and eco-friendly.
We need happy, healthy and contented living. ‘Contended person ever happy’ because contentment is the highest virtue.
