Good project except for the last bit "make them fit our definition." It is not good to force children into a mold. Better to see the greatness and appropriateness of different heroes (and aware of shortcomings) that the child chooses those most suited to his or her own nature. This "all male heroes" is also quite incorrect. Isadora Duncan lifted the sights and spirits of thousands of children with female heroines (and her work still does.
Go back to square one and get to grips with the nature of heroes and role models and communicating an awareness of how they are used, how we can choose them ourselves each to ennoble our own individual spirit and achieve in life. Carlyle's Heroes and Hero Worship might be a good basic place to start.
