I believe that people can learn to be mindful. But a person has to be open to learning any new behavior technique. If you only try to copy another persons suggestions without fully opening your own awareness then it is probably true that it will be fake.
The key to changing ones own behavior is to first observe how you react and how you feel, what you think, etc. Then you can begin to make changes if you choose. Your personality is the canvas you have to work with. But you can choose to change your actions by being aware of what your automatic thought patterns are.
My husband is not naturally mindful. Whenever we have discussed this he says he is often surprised about what my thoughts are about an event or activity that we have just shared. He says that he has begun to think more and not just react impulsively. This makes him more aware of his own beliefs and values. This awareness gives him an opportunity be more mindful. It comes down to him slowing down and taking in the world around him. Small changes have occurred. Just his increased awareness is change in itself.
