This article really touched home with me. I am a person who struggles with depression and I try to work through it and not rely on medication, because I have had side effects from the various medications. I was just having a conversation with my mother this summer about gratitude. I believe that taking time to reflect on what we have to be grateful for helps to build up our "immune systems" to help fight feelings of despair and depression. And I know that it takes a conscious effort to take time to reflect before it eventually becomes a natural part of my daily life. Being grateful makes me feel stronger and helps me ride out the storms that are unavoidable in life. My mother, who is 82, reminded me that when we are grateful we tend to reflect the light that shines in the world. When we focus on the negative things in life we tend to deflect the light. I prefer to try and reflect the light. It helps me and I hope it helps others too. And when I do feel down for whatever reason it really helps to have people around me who are helping to light my path out of the darkness of worry and despair.
I am reposting this because it was not meant as a reply to Stan. (my fault), but just as a comment on the article. Very good article, by the way! Thanks.
