Yes we can "come to church" but Catholics who self-identify as gay or gay-allied by wearing a rainbow stole are not allowed to participate in communion.
For 600 years, from the time of Aquinas, homosexuals who were not sexually active were welcome in the Church. About 1985, Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger, single-handedly changed the Church's position by declaring that gay people, even those who were not "active" were nevertheless intrinsically sinfully, just by existing, not for anything they did.
So far, LGBT people have absolutely NO reason to trust the Roman Catholic Church.
I don't remember being helped much when the girls at my Catholic School tied me up with jump-ropes and sprayed me with water in the gym showers until I could barely breathe, because they found out I wasn't christian, and that I'd kissed another little girl. They may have just been scared children...
...but the fact that the teachers at the school gave me a dry uniform, money, and a passing math grade not to tell my parents...forgive me if that makes me think that perhaps they were teaching a bad lesson to those little girls, and that perhaps all of them -don't- love everyone.
When someone turns the other cheek and children are taught the idea that they can SMACK IT without repercussion, nothing is learned but hatred and fear.
Being a part of a group, a religion, a social order, a belief system...it does NOT mean that all other people in that group are kind, or generous, or love someone. Do not believe for even a moment that "because they're christian!" means that they care or feel the same that you do.
There are monsters in every closet- even mine, and even yours. Religion is not a free trip to morality. It's just a paper bag people can put over their head, that has 'morality' written on the inside of it. Some people choose to read it, and become that word- to be kind, and care.
Others become scared and mad, and they hurt people. They believe that they were right because that word was put in front of them, so they must be what they read...even when they aren't.
