"...it was certain that pulling up right next to me violated their sense of safety." I don't think it's safety, as in fear; more like sense of security, as in their selves. What I always feel when I see homeless and less-fortunate is: There but for the grace of god (or fate, or...) go you or I. I often donate what I can to these folk.
