If anyone had told me prior to the birth of my daughter who has a disability, that I would ever be a comfortable public speaker, an advocate, or an activist in any arena, I would not have believed them. Shortly after my daughter was born I had the first of all of these experiences... When I marvelled about it (and how natural it all suddenly seemed) my father said he thought the difference was caused by 'having something to say, instead of having to say something.' You have articulated my experience.
