When I was working in hospitals there were many, many serious moments especially in the Emergency Room and invariably there were times when some one would say something funny to lighten the mood. It was needed BECAUSE of the seriousness and it did not diminish the seriousness but gave us a relief--otherwise we'd need therapy after each situation! People who do not work in these situations are sometimes horrified by this, but the understanding has to be that some of these situations can be devastating not only to the patients or their relatives but to us the medical personnel. Many times we have hugged one another crying over a situation, but a simple comment helps lighten our hearts and helps us to stay focused on what we are doing!
