Yep, that's pretty confusing. It's funny too that if you go to Wikipedia it seems as though from metaphysical to political, different groups are trying to appropriate nihilistic, yet nobody bothered to break it down into layman's terms. Or I just didn't read long enough to find out that they did.

The best I can boil it down for my own satisfaction is: any thing, event, expression, definition or understanding is only as real to me as I make it. Obviously I value these words, driven by forces in my life, I learned to read, I value dialogue, I take the effort to respond to your post, I write sometimes myself. If someone else looks at the words and says pffff, why would anyone want to read words??? They have a different reality. In my reality they are illiterate, what they maybe is enlightened enough to know that words don't matter. Bottom line, they can't read this reality. A blind person couldn't look at these words. A voice can read them to her or braille could grant him access to the words. A computer stores these words and serves them to us. Do they exist?

The thought is more real than the thing. It exists even after we are gone and the server is gone or the chunks of binary data have been deleted. This conversation happened in at least 3 realities as much so as the shooting of JFK happened. But not in everyone's reality. Without some imaginations a lot less would exist.

Our imagination shapes our reality. It is not our reality though.
