Sometimes I think people confuse happiness with relief. It's so relative depending on where you are on the emotional scale. If you have been hanging out feeling powerless and depressed for a long time, revenge and hatred can "feel good." A person may say they are happy because they bested someone who beat them up or let's say got a nicer car than their jerk of a boss, but it's not necessarily happiness, it's a feeling of relief because you are taking back some of your power.
I love how Abraham-Hicks describes the emotional scale, and what happiness as an emotion indicates- all emotion is an indication of the relationship between the vibration that the self is offering vs. one's inner larger being. The more similar the vibration we offer on a topic is to what "Source" offers on the same topic, the better one feels. When we are loving, joyous, the vibration is singular, when we are feeling discontent, worried, angry, depressed the frequencies are more and more disparate, just like sound waves, the further apart they are the more discordant the relationship and the worse we feel.
"Sometimes people say 'Oh if I just please myself or if others just please themselves would it not be a world of chaos?' And we say, it would be a world of alignment, it would be a world of empowerment. It would be a world of security. You act out, you murder each other, you try to control one another, you abuse one another from your insecurity not your security. You are mean to each other from your place of hatred not from your place of love. It is your disconnection with who you are that causes you to act out in all those abhorrent ways. You do not need to worry about your world getting worse if you selfishly choose alignment with Source" - Abraham-Hicks
