Empathy is good but there are some other things needed too. Like an ethica vision. I will quote Josehph Howe who was a Nova Scotian journalist, politician and public servant.
"When I sit down in solitude to the labours of my profession, the only questions I ask myself are,
What is right? What is just? What is for the public good?"
Write these questions large when engaging our politicians. Sadly, too many of them are today in the pay of the bankers and corporations and these issues are buried in favour of "what is good for my sponsor?"
