I could read it at leisure now. My heart had slowed down as I read it from beginning to end. And there were moments I was close to tearing up. Here are couple such nuggets I highlighted --
-- She looks at me so gently for a moment that her gaze, which lasts no longer than a second, carries me through the rest of the day. There is no question, no criticism, no rebuke - just kindness. She gives me a smile that is worth more than anything. There are not many coins in the cup anyway. 40 cents in half an hour. That's not enough for a big breakfast.
-- Soon we are talking about politics and tuition fees, about our daughters, the unequal distribution of wealth and what it means to give unconditionally.
-- The baker on the second morning who hands me a bag of pastries and spontaneously says as she says goodbye that she will include me in her evening prayers. Viktor's last voucher for a coffee, which he gives me without hesitation. Josip's invitation to breakfast together. The words come timidly, almost awkwardly. He rarely speaks.
Your practice and sharing is helping me be more mindful of the privileges. And also to remember to meet people with kindness, a smile, a pause. I will carry that awareness through rest of my day. Grateful!
