This is fantastic! Well written and thought out, Natalie.
I realize the irony of sharing your essay in my Facebook feed...I know old school app ๐...and then posting comments here on the hopes that you will see my feedback on day...from your flip phone or other smarter device. ๐
I am 56 now and remember the day my neighbor showed me an early webpage in 1994 and I was blown away. Same when a few years later I used Google for the first time. As I tech industry sales guy, I love all the gadgets and apps...and agree that they are slowly disconnecting and killing us.
That is where I will take issue with just this 2nd sentence below. I think that the sort of small circles of people meeting in the park is exactly how we can reclaim our Tribes, communities, family, social systems from the screens that lure us in. Women's and men's circles, community circles have been the anchor of healing and progress as humans since we learned that we are all connected. If that is being a Modern-day Luddite means, count me in!
Some may protest that the Luddites are not sound in their philosophy because many people need access to the internet for their safety/health and connection to both work and school. The personal dissociation they are advocating for doesnโt really bring social systems any closer to protecting individuals happiness, health, safety, or connection in the face of an ever more oppressively digital world.
