In some meditation practices, these ruminations are referred to as the „monkeys in our head“, jumping and screeching from branch to branch. The more we try to ward them off, the louder they become.
The mindfullness techniques enumerated by Dr. Suttie are what really works. I especially like the one which tells us to acknowledge the recurring thoughts as they come with compassion without letting him- or herself get carried away with it. Then intentionally focussing on something else more pleasant.
There are so many bad things happening everywhere; but there are also lots of good things happening at every moment. It is up to us to choose on which to focus on.
