It is a good habit to wake up early but not a must. There are no musts in life. You do what you feel comfortable and most productive with. If you are at your absolute best by being a night bird, I wouldn't want to change you just so that you can be aligned to the rest. If every one is an early bird, who will enjoy the lovely peaceful night.
However if you feel waking early will help you perform better and manage life and time better then here is something that might help :-
21 day habit..
Wake up half an hour earlier every day till you reach your desired time ( eg if you are someone who wakes at 7 am in the morning and want to get into habit of waking up at 5 am then-wake at 6.30 am for 2-3 days then 6 am and then 5.30 am then 5 am...)
Once you have spent a day after waking up at five am ( or whatever your target time is) regardless of how you spent it -- You will have to keep repeating this for 21 days in a row so that your day-night sleep cycle changes into a habit. know that the First week will be the hardest.
You might have to have a lighter lunch in order to not fall asleep in the afternoon. However the first few days this doesn't matter. It is important you get into a habit and then change other aspects of the day.
As I said first few days you will just want to go back to being lazy or sleeping till late, but if you imagine you are in military or army or a special training camp - you will find yourself to be more compliant. (from personal experience)
Also if you imagine doing this to be like your ideal best self (what you want to see yourself as in future ) - it will help.
Again the main thing is to be like' Nike' and 'just do it' from tthe word go - or whenever you read this and just do it for 21 days in a row without having any plan B irrespective of how you feel. I would also associate or attach a regular meditation and exercise programme (for eg at 6-6.30am) to this so it will have the added benefit of keeping me healthy. I would advice, from personal experience, not to postpone (for eg I will start doing this from the next sunday or whatever - this is a big NO NO) but start doing it from now/today.
If you imagine a soldier in military or army- they go through the most rigorous training - wake up at any time, have only few hours sleep and yet manage the most physicially challenging jobs in the world - all the while staying alert - you can really appreciate the beauty of a disciplined mind. They persistently show that your body and mind is the servant of your will and not the other way around and if you want to change a particular habit of yourself you have the resources within you.
( I hold high regard for soldiers and officers in the way they discipline their lives and have used to try their mentality / approach to things in life with good results)
Hope this helped. Sorry if I bored you!!
