The day after Hurricane Laura rolled through parts of Louisiana and Texas, Rikesh Patel, the owner of several McDonald's restaurants in Louisiana, made a call to corporate. Within 24 hours a restaurant on wheels, called the McRig, arrived in Lake Charles to help feed families in need of a hot meal. The effects of the storm were severe, with roughly 90% of residents still without electricity two weeks after the storm. With the McRig on scene, Patel rallied his employees to staff the truck and serve as many people as possible. Over 6 days, Patel said they served more than 10,000 free brown bag meals of cheeseburgers, fries and bottled water.
