"One way to open your eyes is to ask yourself, "What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?"" --Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature

Before there was an environmental movement, there was one brave woman and her very brave book. "There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings ... Then a strange blight crept over the area and everything began to change ... There was a strange stillness ... On the mornings that had once throbbed with the dawn chorus of scores of bird voices there was now no sound; only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh." Rachel Carson's book on the impact of man on Nature, "Silent Spring," was serialized in the New Yorker in June 1962, and became a runaway best seller, with international reverberations. A harbinger of the new environmentalism, Carson was one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Important People of the Century.
