"We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are." --The Talmud
Portraits For the Homeless
For those struggling to afford a place to live, posing for family portraits can seem like a luxury. But this fall at a homeless shelter in California, people did exactly that. On the other side of the camera were local photography students -- who had been learning not only about lighting and shutter speeds but also about ethics, service and the power of images to catalyze social change. Before even bringing out their cameras, the students spent a few weeks volunteering at the shelter and kept journals of their experiences. For many, the time proved transformative and helped alter assumptions of what it means to be homeless. Soon, students will deliver prints to the homeless residents for them to share with their own families.
BE THE CHANGE
Approach someone who you tend to see in a limited way with the intent to see them as they are, and consider how it shifts your interaction.
