While preparing for the 1980 Olympics, two-time Olympic Pentathlon champion Marilyn King sustained a spinal injury that left her bed-ridden. King was determined not to end her career on her back -- and to finish in the top three at the Olympic trials. Unable to put in the grueling hours of required practice, King spent time watching films of successful pentathletes, visualizing and feeling herself going through the same events. Amazingly, King finished second in the Moscow trials despite almost no practice, attributing it to her psychological state. She went on to found Beyond Sports, an organization which seeks to extend the building of mental strength and related skills to a broader arena of individual and social concerns, including world peace.
