Child Poet and Peacemaker
Speaking at 14 year-old Mattie’s funeral, Jimmy Carter said that he’d traveled to 122 countries and met kings and queens, but Mattie Stepanek was “the most extraordinary person I ever met.” Despite suffering from muscular dystrophy, Mattie’s first poem came when he was 3! His wisdom, positivity, and messages of peace have inspired and given hope to millions. At the age of 10, Mattie wrote, “We must remember to play after every storm and to celebrate the gift of life as we have it, or else life becomes a task, rather than a gift. We must always listen to the song in our heart, and share that song with others.”
