When rain falls on impervious surfaces, such as roads, it absorbs contaminates as it drains away into waterways. UK researchers have found that rain gardens, a shallow depression in a garden containing bark much and shrubs, can remove up to 99% of these toxins. As the world's population urbanizes and cities continue to grow, rain gardens can be a viable, beautiful, and inexpensive solution to pollution and flooding.
