"I have been asked a question many a time, 'Who is your hero?' I say, my hero does not depend on the position a person occupies. My heroes are those simple men and women who have committed themselves to fighting poverty wherever that is to be found in the world." --Nelson Mandela
Rough Guide For a Better World
Although global population has risen by two billion in just thirty years and many hundreds of millions remain poor, their numbers are falling. The number of children who die before their fifth birthday, for example, halved between 1960 and 2001. The number of adults who cannot read or write fell from 53% in 1970 to 27 percent in 2001, while today twice as many people now have access to basic sanitation than did in 1975. And in 1960, while you could expect to live to 46, today that number has gone up to 64. All this from the 112 page 'Rough Guide For a Better World' paper just released by UK's Department for International Development!
